In the Accelerated Reading program, students in grades 1 through 8 are given the STAR reading assessment and throughout the year work toward Accelerated Reader goals. The first 30 minutes of the school day is devoted to A.R. reading school-wide and they periodically take A.R. tests on their homeroom computers to assess comprehension and fluency. Students have the opportunity to visit the A.R. store to purchase items for the points they have earned in the A.R. program. Grades K-6 participate in the Book-It Program sponsored by Pizza Hut, and students can earn Six Flags tickets through the Read to Succeed Program. In addition, any student in grades 1 through 8 that has reached his/her A.R. goal for the year is rewarded with a field trip to Splashway Waterpark in Sheridan, TX in May. Several local businesses have also provided certificates for free ice cream and drinks for students as reading incentives.
Throughout the year, Family Reading Nights are held to encourage parents to come and read with their children and observe them taking A.R. tests. In the past, these have been a great success with many families coming out and enjoying a nice evening of reading complete with refreshments and door prizes.
Another ongoing reading activity at Sweet Home School is the PALS program. Older students from local schools visit the campus on Mondays and Wednesdays to read with our students in grades Kindergarten through 4th grade that need support. In the past this has proven to be a very beneficial program and we plan to continue it as long as volunteers are available.
