The following are the characteristics of dyslexia which is one of several distinct learning disabilities: difficulty reading single words in isolation; difficulty accurately decoding nonsense words or unfamiliar words; slow, inaccurate, or labored oral reading (lack of reading fluency); and/or difficulty with learning to spell.
Parents and/or teachers may recommend students for the dyslexia program. The teacher will need to complete a Campus Review Committee Referral form and a teacher checklist. The Dylexia Designee administers individual assessments which may include but are not limited to: the Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing (CTOPP) and the Woodcock Johnson Reading Mastery Test. The parent needs to complete the Parent Interview form, and alternative teaching strategies used are documented for the Campus Review Committee to use in determining placement in the program.
Services provided in the Dyslexia Program include any appropriate remedial program such as tutorials, Title I, phonemic awareness training, computer programs, and additional classroom strategies. Students may be served in the regular classroom, during a pull-out time, after school, and/or during a summer program of learning.
