Extracurricular Activities

Student Leadership Team
Since 2003, Sweet Home ISD has had a Student Leadership Team. Prior to having a Student Leadership Team, there was Sweet Home Student Council which started in 1999. The Student Leaders who are passing all of their classes and on target to reach their reading goals are able to attend meetings which are usually held on Monday mornings following a school-wide assembly in the gym. At the meetings, the team discusses the needs of the community and the school, prioritizes projects, and plans for upcoming events.

Students interested in being a member of the Student Leadership Team have to fill out an application with an essay attached describing their past involvement in service projects and ideas for improving the school and community. Teachers review all of the applications submitted and decide which students are eligible to be Sweet Home Student Leaders.  Academic progress and conduct are reviewed each grading period, and students needing improvement are placed on probation.  Severe infractions may result in automatic dismissal from the Student Leadership Team.

In the fall of each year, the Sweet Home Student Leaders organize a food drive at the school and take donations from the Sweet Home School to the Yoakum Food Bank. They change the marquee every Monday to inform the community about upcoming events, and they put up and take down the flags every day. The student leaders present Power Point Presentations to different organizations such as: Lions Club, Rotary Club, Retired Teachers Organization, KJZT, and the Sweet Home American Legion. They have also presented at Texas A&M University, the Lavaca County Historical Society, and at the Region III Safe and Drug Free Schools Conference.

Band

Students in Grades 6-8 have an opportunity to attend band classes at the Yoakum Junior High School during the last period of the school day.  Students are transported from Sweet Home School to the Yoakum Band Hall on a Sweet Home School bus.  After band class, the students are allowed to ride the Yoakum ISD buses home.

Academic Meet

Sweet Home School hosts the Small Schools Academic Meet each year. Students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of academic competitions including:  Art, Calculator Applications, Creative Writing, Dictionary, Editorial Writing, Impromptu, Listening, Maps, Graphs, & Charts, Mathematics, Modern Oratory, Music Memory, Number Sense, Oral Reading, Ready Writing, Science I & II, Spelling and Storytelling.

The Athletic Program at S.H.S. consists of volleyball, flag football, basketball, softball and track. The Sweet Home Cougars continue to compete against other small schools in the area including:  Vysehrad, Meyersville, Ezzell, Westhoff, and Victoria Christian Schools.  Sweet Home also hosts the Small Schools Volleyball and Basketball Tournaments.

Cheerleading

Parent Volunteer, Tara DeBord, sponsors the cheerleading program at Sweet Home School. Some of the cheerleader’s activities include directing pep rallies, initiating homecoming activities and cheering at sports events.  Pep rallies are held during enrichment period at 11:30 a.m. on home game days.

Yearbook

A yearbook staff has been in place in the past consisting of a parent/volunteer and students who are willing to take the time to take photos, document activities at the school and arrange these for publishing in the yearbook.  The yearbook has always been a highlight for the students and the day they are handed out is a very exciting time for the entire school. At the present time, we are in need of parents/volunteers willing to assist  Mrs. Turk in her effort to create our yearbook.  If you are interested, please call the school at 293-3221.
